What is the workers comp class code for tower ground crews?
Ground crew members who do not climb are typically classified under different NCCI codes than climbers, resulting in significantly lower rates. Common codes include 5606 (Contractor - Executive Supervision), 8227 (Construction Consulting), or 5222 (Concrete Construction) depending on their actual duties. Some ground crew performing material handling and rigging support may fall under 5040 (Iron or Steel Erection - framing of structures not over two stories) if they are handling structural components at ground level. The critical distinction is whether the employee ever climbs. If a ground crew member occasionally climbs, even rarely, their entire payroll should be classified under the climbing code. NCCI rules generally assign the highest-rated code that applies to any part of an employee's duties unless the duties are clearly separated and documented. Proper payroll splitting requires clear job descriptions, documented policies prohibiting cross-over duties, and often a division of labor that is reinforced during audits. If your auditor finds that ground-classified employees have rescue certifications or climbing equipment assigned to them, they may reclassify that payroll to the climbing rate.
