Does my GL cover underground utility strikes during fiber boring?

Standard GL policies may exclude underground work or damage to underground utilities through specific exclusions or XCU (explosion, collapse, underground) limitations. For fiber construction involving horizontal directional drilling (HDD) or trenching, you need GL that explicitly includes XCU coverage and does not exclude underground utility damage. A single utility strike can be extraordinarily expensive: hitting a gas main creates explosion risk and evacuations ($500,000+), striking a major fiber trunk line can generate business interruption claims from hundreds of affected businesses ($1M+), and hitting a high-voltage electrical line creates immediate life-safety risk plus property damage. Before starting any fiber boring project, confirm: (1) Your GL includes XCU coverage without limitation, (2) There is no exclusion for damage caused by mechanical boring or drilling equipment, (3) Your per-occurrence limit is adequate for the utilities in the bore path (a bore crossing a major fiber trunk or gas transmission line needs higher limits than a residential street), (4) You have complied with state one-call requirements (811) as failure to do so can void coverage. Document all locate tickets and bore plans as part of your insurance compliance protocol. Some carriers require evidence of one-call compliance as a policy condition.
