TowerInsure

What insurance does a tower maintenance crew need versus an erection crew?

Tower maintenance crews need the same fundamental coverages as erection crews (GL without height exclusion, WC, umbrella, auto) but the risk profile and costs differ. Maintenance work typically involves smaller crews (2-4 persons versus 6-12 for erection), lighter equipment (no cranes or heavy rigging), and repetitive site visits rather than extended construction projects. Insurance differences include: (1) Lower GL premium because there is less property damage exposure without structural modification or heavy crane operations. (2) Similar WC class codes and rates because the height exposure is identical even though the work scope is narrower. A climber at 300 feet faces the same fall risk whether installing or maintaining. (3) Lower inland marine needs since maintenance crews carry less equipment value than erection crews. (4) Potentially lower umbrella requirements if maintenance-only MSAs have lower limits than full erection MSAs. (5) No builders risk or installation floater needed since you are not installing new structures. However, maintenance crews need coverage for damage to existing equipment during service. If you damage an operating antenna or radio unit during maintenance, causing network downtime, the carrier may pursue a claim for property damage plus business interruption.
